A two-day festival of Armenian culture "Armenia" took place in Komotini

29 August, 2022

On August 26 - 27, the two-day festival of Armenian culture "Armenia" took place in Komotini, Greece. It  was a great success. On the occasion of the festival, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia to Thessaloniki, Mr. Akis Dagazyan, delivered a speech and answered to the questions of the local media.

"First of all, I would like to convey the warm greetings and best wishes of  H.E. Mr. Tigran Mkrtchyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the Hellenic Republic, regarding this unique event about the Armenian culture. At the same time, I would like to congratulate the organizers of the event - the Cultural and Educational Union of Armenians of Komotini and the Department of Culture, Education and Sports of the Komotini Municipality for realizing through this initiative the dream of deceased Mrs. Jeny Kasapyan.

The Republic of Armenia is privileged to have a Diaspora.  The Komotini community of the scattered around the world Armenian Diaspora, makes us all truly proud. The presence of Armenians here has a history of centuries. That continued presence left its mark on the struggles of the Greeks.  The Armenians of Komotini played a unique role in the integration of Thrace into Greece - they sacrificed their lives in the mountains of Albania, being part of the National Resistance struggle.

Despite the fact that the Armenians of Komotini have fully integrated into Greek society, they not only managed to preserve their Armenian identity and cultural heritage, but also contribute to the spread of Armenian culture through similar events.

Also, I would like to remind that this year we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Greece and Armenia.  Similar initiatives further strengthen the relations between our countries, expand cultural exchanges, and provide an opportunity to start the realization of town twinning process of Komotini with any Armenian city".
